Waterwise landscaping does not require turning a garden into a field of rock. The better goal is a layered landscape that matches plants and water to the conditions of each part of the property.

Begin with hydrozones

A hydrozone groups plants with similar water needs on the same irrigation area. This prevents a low-water shrub from being watered like lawn—or a higher-need accent from being placed where it cannot receive enough water. Hydrozoning works best when it is part of the layout from the start.

  1. Identify the highest-value planted areas. Entry gardens, outdoor living spaces, and important views may deserve more visual density.
  2. Study sun and exposure. Reflected heat, slope, afternoon sun, wind, and existing tree roots can change water demand.
  3. Group plants by mature needs. Consider water, soil, exposure, and maintenance—not just appearance at the nursery.
  4. Design the irrigation around the zones. Choose appropriate equipment and make it accessible for inspection and adjustment.
  5. Cover and protect the soil. Use suitable mulch, living groundcovers, or other treatments based on the location and wildfire context.

Replace thirsty lawn with a complete composition

Removing lawn creates an opportunity, but lawn removal alone is not a design. A successful conversion can include a smaller purposeful lawn, broad planting beds, shade trees where appropriate, paths, seating, flowering perennials, evergreen structure, and open areas that make maintenance easier.

Living groundcovers can be useful in the right conditions. UC Cooperative Extension notes that drought-tolerant foothill groundcovers may help cool soil, conserve moisture, limit weeds, and reduce erosion. They still need appropriate establishment care and site selection.

Choose climate-ready plants, not merely “drought tolerant” labels

A plant may tolerate low water but fail because of winter cold, poor drainage, reflected heat, browsing, or the wrong soil. Colfax and nearby foothill communities can have different conditions from the Sacramento Valley. Elevation and microclimate matter.

UC Davis Arboretum’s climate-ready plant resources emphasize plants tested for heat, cold, low irrigation, habitat value, and garden performance. Use those resources as a starting point, then confirm the plant’s mature size and fit for the exact property.

Make the landscape feel generous

  • Repeat a limited set of reliable plants instead of using one of everything.
  • Use evergreen structure to hold the design together through winter.
  • Layer low, medium, and taller forms where space allows.
  • Concentrate seasonal color where people will see it.
  • Use shade strategically to improve comfort and reduce heat on outdoor surfaces.
  • Leave enough room for plants to reach mature size without constant pruning.
Waterwise does not mean maintenance-free. New plants need establishment water, irrigation needs seasonal adjustment, and every garden needs some pruning, cleanup, and observation.

Ask these questions before changing irrigation

  • Which plants are staying, and what water do they actually need?
  • Are lawn and shrubs currently on the same valve?
  • Does the property have pressure, coverage, runoff, or drainage problems?
  • Where can equipment be inspected without damaging planting?
  • How will the system be adjusted through the seasons?
